Research: Research Associates Program

GOALS & OBJECTIVES

In order to further strengthen the Bunche Center research mandate, the Center has initiated a competitive faculty grant program that enables the Bunche Center-affiliated faculty and other UCLA faculty working on African American studies to conduct their research with the Bunche Center as an intellectual base. This initiative will help further the three key goals of the Bunche Center: to provide the resources and an environment required to develop and support empirical multidisciplinary research in African American Studies; to provide opportunities for intellectual exchange and collaborative research among and between faculty and students; and to develop vehicles for research dissemination that would more effectively link the various centers of African American scholarship. Faculty members awarded a research grant will be designated "Research Associate" and will have access to office space in the Bunche Center to house their research Associates, equipment and other essentials. Each Research Associate will be expected to make a presentation of their research findings at the Bunche Center during the academic year of their grant tenure.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Eligibility

UCLA faculty members affiliated with the Bunche Center, or those who specialize in African American Studies are eligible for this program, except for faculty members on leave or on sabbatical. Preference will be given to junior faculty members.

Selection Procedure

The application for the Bunche Center Research Associates grant will entail a brief summary of the proposed research (including methodology), the faculty member's current curriculum vitae, and a simple budget listing the major categories of expenditure. These materials should be submitted to the Bunche Center Research Unit, 160 Haines Hall. Applications will be due the first week of the Spring Quarter of the academic year preceding the grant, and will be reviewed by the 6th week of the quarter. The Bunche Center will set-up a revolving faculty committee to review the applications and recommend the grants. Awardees will be notified by the end of Spring Quarter. The award may commence any time after the close of the academic year (e.g. July). The monies will be available to the grantee on the basis of reimbursement.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

In person, please submit the following materials to the Research Unit:

Curriculum Vitae

Funding

Vice Chancellor Claudia Mitchell-Kernan extended the funding to support this activity for the first year. The Bunche Center has approached a number of funding agencies to augment these funds and ensure a steady pipeline of financial resources for this vital program.

The Grant

The amount of the grant will be approximately $3,000. The grant may be supplemented by external funding, and the Bunche Center Research Unit is prepared to extend its support to the grantee in identifying supplementary funding sources.
